I’m trying to find a reasonable middle ground between keeping things in the spirit of an open movie, while still accounting for the fact that I’m doing this for a living. It’s a common scenario for CC creators to waive aspects of their licenses on a project-by-project basis so common, in fact, that it’s mentioned on the license overview page linked in the post.Įven I get regular headaches from the intricacies of licensing law, and it has been the basis of my livelihood for quite some time. As for the rest of the music: If you want to do something interesting with it, just ask me. Commercial usage is a different matter, but I’m generally also quite cooperative there. I can state here that I’d never go after someone who does a rendition of the song and puts it on YouTube, as long as it’s properly attributed, and I’ll gladly give permission to anyone who asks me for it. So in the strictest legal sense, you’d still need to acquire “traditional” performance/publishing rights in order to record and publish your own version. Those CC licenses apply to the actual recordings as they appear on different media, not the “abstract” song itself. Only just copying and redistributing isn’t ”Creative” at all, right? 😉

I fully understand the NC, you feel screwed when a commercial TV program gains money by freely using you music in their $$$ content, but why ND? It takes a bit out of the soul of the whole Creative Commons idea. No, because she based it on the song in the movie, which is CC-BY. Looking forward to adding this to my Jan Morgenstern collection!
